What Are Pigeon Toes (In-Toeing)?
Pigeon toes, also known as in-toeing, is a condition where a child's feet turn inward while walking or running. This can be observed in toddlers and young children and is often part of normal development. Several variations of in-toeing affect the alignment of the legs and feet:
Internal Tibial Torsion
This involves the lower part of the leg rotating inward, causing the child to trip often.
Femoral Anteversion
This occurs when there is an increased inward bend in the upper part of the leg, causing the upper leg to rotate inwardly.
Existing Medical Problems
In some cases, in-toeing may be associated with underlying medical conditions such as Cerebral Palsy.
How Is In-Toeing/Pigeon Toes Treated?
In many cases, children with in-toeing outgrow the condition as they grow older and develop better coordination and muscle control. Treatment is often not necessary unless the condition causes foot pain or interferes with daily activities. If treatment is recommended, options may include:
Observation
Regular monitoring to ensure the condition does not worsen.
Physical Therapy
Exercises may be prescribed to improve coordination and alignment.
Special Footwear
Custom shoes or orthotics might be recommended to support proper foot alignment.
